Attention Collectors!
You are looking at the second Barbie Doll ever produced - Barbie #2!
Released by Mattel in the Spring of 1959, Barbie would prove to be a sensation in the toy world selling over 350,000 units in the first year alone which was unprecedented success for a toy during those days - in fact it was the best selling toy of the year! Barbie is a certified piece of American history and pop culture. The dolls are still quite popular and are being sold to this day!
Barbie #1 and Barbie #2 are -very- similar dolls but you can be sure this is the original #2 Barbie by looking at her feet - they have no holes for the pegged pedestal stand while Barbie #1 does. This Barbie is complete but some of the parts are not original. That said, they are all still vintage period correct Mattel Barbie products. Barbie #2 does not come with her Original Box, instead she comes with the Blonde 850 box with the R and not the TM symbol. She also comes with the original 1959 Fashion Booklet (with R symbol, not TM), a vintage R Ponytail stand, Original Black & White Zebra-Striped Swimsuit, Original Black Mules (Open-Toe Shoes), Original Gold Hoop Earrings & the Original White Sunglasses with blue lenses. Also included are a set of pearl earrings.
Condition-wise, Barbie is looking great when you consider her age and the materials used to make her. There is some of the "ghost green" discoloration as well as some fading, minor marks & smudges throughout. The paint on her face was touched up / traced over by the original owner. The Gold Hoop Earrings have tarnished with time. According to the original owner, her ponytail was cut off at some point but was re-rooted. The front curls were never touched. This Barbie Doll had the nipples filed off by Mattel themselves, this was due to parental concern over sexual matters at the time. The Zebra swimsuit looks great and has no stains. She has no missing fingers and all of her painted nails look pretty good, both arms swing with no issues. The Fashion Booklet is in good shape, all pages are intact and there is no major wear though the staples are a bit rusted. The sunglasses have some wear but are intact. The box is worn but this is to be expected due to its age, and even then it is in relatively great shape. It's fully intact but does have some rips / splits. There is minimal discoloration / staining to the boxes both inside and out. The box comes with an insert that does not appear to be original but does help keep Barbie in place in the box. Barbie has tight limbs, no nose nip, no neck splits and no green ears. All things considered, she's in fantastic condition and would make an excellent candidate for restoration should you choose to do so.
Barbie #2 is actually rarer than Barbie #1. This is because she was only produced for a three month period before Mattel moved on to Barbie #3. This means there are far fewer #2 Barbie Dolls out there than #1s. Don't miss out on this opportunity to own a real piece of American history & pop culture!
Please review the provided photos carefully for your own assessment of Barbie's condition - and Thanks for Looking!
