APPLESEED BOOK THREE #1 ORIGINAL PUBLISHED COVER ART
ADAM WARREN
ECLIPSE COMICS / STUDIO PROTEUS – 1989
Offered here is the original hand-drawn and hand-colored cover artwork for Appleseed Book Three #1, created by Adam Warren and published by Eclipse Comics / Studio Proteus in August 1989.
This is the actual one-of-a-kind original artwork used to produce the published cover — not a print, reproduction, preliminary drawing or recreation. Manga comics have boomed in value and demand recently and Original Manga artwork is very scarce!
Appleseed Book Three #1 was the first of five issues adapting Book Three, The Scales of Prometheus, from Masamune Shirow's landmark Japanese manga series. Adam Warren provided the covers for the five-issue Eclipse Comics presentation of Book Three.
THE ORIGINAL COVER
The artwork features Deunan Knute at the center of an explosive science-fiction battle scene, surrounded by futuristic powered armor and weapons fire.
It is an exceptionally strong example of Warren's early manga-influenced work: a fully developed cover composition filled with machinery, weapons, movement and explosive color.
The original is executed by hand in ink and color on art board, with the artwork extending across nearly the entire image area.
Original crop/registration marks remain visible around the illustration, documenting its use in the comic-production process.
The artwork is prominently signed by Adam Warren along the lower margin.

Appleseed Book Three #1
Eclipse Comics / Studio Proteus
August 1989
Cover Artist: Adam Warren
Story & Interior Art: Masamune Shirow
Book Three: The Scales of Prometheus
The Eclipse serialization of Appleseed ran for 19 issues across four books, with Book Three beginning with this issue in August 1989.
That makes this artwork particularly significant: it is the first Adam Warren cover from Appleseed Book Three.
ADAM WARREN & APPLESEED
Adam Warren was one of the pioneering American comic artists to embrace and bridge Japanese manga into American comics.
His connection with Appleseed predates much of the manga-influenced work for which he would later become widely known.
For Eclipse's American publication, the cover assignments changed as the series progressed. Masamune Shirow supplied the Book One covers, Arthur Adams handled Book Two, and Adam Warren created all five Book Three covers.
That places this cover at an especially interesting intersection in the history of American comics and the early American manga market.
Warren would go on to become closely associated with manga-influenced American comics through work including The Dirty Pair and later his creator-owned series Empowered.
MASAMUNE SHIROW'S APPLESEED
Created by Masamune Shirow, Appleseed became one of the important Japanese science-fiction manga properties introduced to American comic readers during the 1980s.
The series follows Deunan Knute and Briareos Hecatonchires through the technologically advanced city of Olympus, combining cyberpunk, military science fiction, political intrigue, robotics, artificial intelligence and Shirow's famously intricate mechanical designs.
Eclipse's American edition was produced in conjunction with Studio Proteus, one of the pioneering organizations responsible for introducing Japanese manga to American comic readers during this period.
