Offered here is the original hand-drawn and hand-colored published cover artwork for Appleseed Book Three #3, created by acclaimed artist Adam Warren for Eclipse Comics' American publication of Masamune Shirow's legendary Appleseed manga.

Published in September 1989, Appleseed: Book Three #3 is part of The Scales of Prometheus storyline. Masamune Shirow provided the story and interior artwork, while Adam Warren created the cover artwork for all five issues of Eclipse's Book Three series.

This is the actual one-of-a-kind original artwork used to create the published comic-book cover — not a print, reproduction, production proof or recreation. Manga comics have boomed in value and demand recently and Original Manga artwork is very scarce!

The cover features Deunan Knute in the middle of an explosive futuristic firefight, surrounded by heavily armored combat figures and a barrage of weapons fire. The composition is packed with the cyberpunk, military science-fiction and manga imagery that made Appleseed such an influential work.

Warren's artwork is fully rendered in ink and hand-applied color on art board, with vivid blues, oranges and earth tones dramatically contrasting the black-and-white mechanical figures. Original crop and registration marks remain visible around the image area, evidence of the artwork's preparation for professional publication.

The artwork is prominently signed by Adam Warren along the lower margin.

A SIGNIFICANT EARLY ADAM WARREN COVER

Adam Warren's Appleseed work occupies an important place in his career and in the early history of Japanese manga being published for American comic-book audiences.

Eclipse's American Appleseed editions featured different artists providing covers for different books. Masamune Shirow supplied the Book One covers, Arthur Adams created the Book Two covers, and Adam Warren created all five covers for Book Three.

Warren would subsequently become one of the American artists most closely associated with manga-influenced comic artwork, particularly through his work on The Dirty Pair and later Empowered.
