SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #61 – PAGE 33 ORIGINAL PUBLISHED COMIC ART
JOHN BUSCEMA – PENCILS & INKS

Offered here is an outstanding piece of original published John Buscema artwork from The Savage Sword of Conan #61, published by Marvel Comics in 1981.

This is page 33 from “The Wizard Fiend of Zingara,” written by Michael Fleisher with artwork penciled AND inked by the legendary John Buscema. Marvel's own credits confirm Buscema as both penciller and inker for the story.

This is the actual, one-of-a-kind hand-drawn artwork created for publication — not a print, reproduction, stat or recreation.

JOHN BUSCEMA PENCILS & INKS

Stunning artwork and compelling subject matter aside, one of the most desirable aspects of this page is that Buscema finished the artwork himself.

John Buscema is one of the artists most closely associated with Conan, and while many of his Conan pages were inked by other artists, Savage Sword of Conan #61 features Buscema's own finished inks over his pencils

The result is an excellent example of Buscema's unfiltered approach to Conan and sword-and-sorcery artwork.

A FANTASTIC CONAN / HORROR PAGE

This is an especially visually compelling page, combining Conan, A Sexy Girl, supernatural horror, a grotesque ghoul and dramatic action.

The upper sequence shows Conan confronted by a disturbing supernatural scene while holding a woman he witnesses a horrifying, bloodthirsty ghoul.

The enormous central panel dominates the page, depicting the ghoul crouched over a partially devoured victim while Conan watches in horror. The published narration describes the creature's blood-lust and freshly savored gore, making this an unusually graphic example of the horror imagery for which Savage Sword of Conan became famous.

The lower panels return the focus directly to Conan as he struggles against the woman's embrace while attempting to confront the danger.

This isn't simply a transitional dialogue page. It has:

Conan prominently pictured multiple times
Large central horror/action image
Monster / ghoul imagery
Sword-and-sorcery content
Sexy Female
Classic Buscema anatomy and figure work
Buscema pencils AND inks
Published Marvel artwork

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #61

The Savage Sword of Conan #61 carries a February 1981 cover date and contains the feature-length story “The Wizard Fiend of Zingara.” Michael Fleisher wrote the story, John Buscema supplied pencils and inks, and Rick Parker lettered it.

Buscema's association with Conan is one of the defining chapters of his career, and his artwork helped establish the visual identity of Robert E. Howard's barbarian for generations of comic readers.

The oversized black-and-white Savage Sword format was particularly well suited to Buscema's powerful figure work and dramatic storytelling.

JOHN BUSCEMA & CONAN

John Buscema remains one of the definitive Conan artists in American comics.

His muscular anatomy, expressive figures, cinematic compositions and ability to depict the brutal fantasy world of the Hyborian Age made his interpretation of Conan one of the most recognizable in the character's history.

An original self-inked Buscema Savage Sword page offers something particularly appealing: the finished line visible on the board is Buscema's own.

An exceptional piece of vintage Marvel original art featuring Conan the Barbarian, supernatural horror and John Buscema's own pencils and finished inks.
